On-demand co-working is here to stay

27th February 2021

The drive for flexibility concerning all aspects of the workplace is another trend that has been accelerated as a result of Covid. Workspaces around the world have been left vacant as companies introduce remote-work policies in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Spotify has become the latest major tech company to make the transition to remote-first working, announcing that employees will be free to “work from anywhere” starting this summer – even if that means working from another country.

The streaming service is introducing a flexible-working scheme called “My Work Mode” that will give Spotify staff choice over whether they work full-time at home, from the office, or a hybrid combination of the two.

Staff will also have more flexibility over the cities and countries they choose to work from, with Spotify offering to support staff with co-working space membership if they wish to work from a location that isn’t close to a Spotify office.

The streaming service is the latest in a line of major tech companies to make the move to a work-from-anywhere model. Salesforce, Microsoft, Twitter and Facebook have announced similar moves in previous months. Even traditional financial institutions such as Nationwide, Barclays, and JP Morgan, have admitted that WFH, or some hybrid of WFH and office-based work, will probably become the new normal.

The CFO’s of the world have realised the potential of huge cost savings and are re-looking workspace on a basis of time used, rather than spending on a per Square foot basis for an under-utilised space.

Workspace is only needed where and when an employee needs it to be productive.

Companies such as Hopspace is uberizing workspaces by offering an app-based, on-demand workspace platform that enables enterprise users to digital nomads, to book and use a workspace where and when they need it.
